WEBDESK: As Pakistan and India get set for their high-stakes encounter in the Champions Trophy in Dubai, former Pakistan captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed takes a moment to reflect on the historic Champions Trophy win over India in 2017.
Sarfaraz recalled the iconic moment he lifted the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday, saying: “I had just requested the boys to let me lift the trophy for a moment before everyone joins in. These cherished memories resurface every year when June 18 arrives.”
Pakistan’s journey to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy was not an easy one. After losing their first game to India by 124 runs (DLS method), Pakistan looked to be down and out of the competition. However, what followed afterward was a redemption story for the ages. After scraping narrow wins against South Africa and then Sri Lanka, Pakistan managed to qualify for the semi-finals where they comfortably defeated England by 8 wickets to book their place in the finals in a rematch with India.
The final, one of Pakistan’s most famous wins, took place on 18th June, 2017 at the Oval cricket ground. Pakistan defeated India by a massive 180 runs courtesy of a century from Fakhar Zaman and a fiery bowling spell from Muhammad Amir. Recalling a conversation with New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Sarfaraz mentioned how Southee called it an “easy win” for Pakistan.
He disagreed, saying that it came with an intense pressure and lots of preparation.
“Every player dreams of winning a title that is remembered for a lifetime,” he said.
Sarfaraz Ahmed highlighted the overwhelming support the team received in England, recalling how they did a lap of honour to acknowledge the fans.
As the high stakes battle between the two rival nations closes in, Sarfaraz Ahmed expressed excitement about the Champions Trophy returning to Pakistan. He praised the country’s preparations, stating the grounds are in excellent shape and the nation is eager for the tournament.
