Former Pakistan’s cricket team bowler, Saqlain Mushtaq is likely to be appointed as the current team’s head coach after its disappointing performance in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.

It is pertinent to mention that Saqlain also served as the coach of the team between 2021 and 2022.

The current head coach is Aqib Javed.

The former cricketer’s specialty in spin bowling may benefit the team ahead of their tour of New Zealand next month.

Saqlain Mushtaq offered role before Champions Trophy

According to some reports, Saqlain Mushtaq was offered to assume the role of the head coach, however, he had some reservations regarding the team’s selection but now he has agreed to the coaching.

The development has come after some reports suggest that players including captain Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah are likely to be dropped from the squad for the team’s tour of New Zealand.

It is also reported that the squad that will visit New Zealand will include five to six younger talents. However, the decision is yet to be made.

The above-mentioned players received heavy criticism from fans and former Pakistani cricketers after the team failed to win a single match in the Champions Trophy, an event happening in Pakistan after decades.

Pakistan ended the International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament at the bottom of Group A with a point after their last match against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain in Rawalpindi.
