WEBDESK: Red Bull Racing has made a major driver change just two races into the Formula 1 season, ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. The team has promoted Yuki Tsunoda to its senior squad, while Liam Lawson has been demoted to Racing Bulls (formerly AlphaTauri). The decision comes after Lawson’s underwhelming performances in the first two races of the season.

Lawson, who was given a chance at Red Bull Racing, struggled to adapt to the RB21 car. He crashed out of the Australian Grand Prix and finished 12th in China. With the team currently trailing McLaren and Mercedes in the constructors’ standings, management decided to make an early switch.

“It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21 at the first two races, and as a result, we have collectively taken the decision to make an early switch,” Horner said in a statement.

Tsunoda’s big break

Tsunoda, who previously raced for Racing Bulls, has been given the opportunity to drive alongside Max Verstappen. The decision is also significant because Honda, Red Bull’s engine partner, has supported Tsunoda’s career, and his first race with Red Bull Racing will be at Honda-owned Suzuka in Japan. His strong start to the 2025 season, including a solid sprint race performance in China, further justified his promotion.

What’s next for Lawson?

Meanwhile, Lawson will return to Racing Bulls, where he will race alongside rookie Isack Hadjar. This move follows Red Bull Racing’s history of making quick driver changes, similar to past decisions involving Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon.

Despite his demotion, Lawson’s F1 career is not over. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner stated that the team remains committed to his development. If he can perform well at Racing Bulls, there is still a chance he could earn a spot back at Red Bull Racing in the future.

As the F1 season progresses, all eyes will be on Tsunoda to see if he can prove himself at the highest level and help Red Bull Racing regain momentum in the championship battle.
