Advisor to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has revealed the conditions following which founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan could be released from prison.
Speaking on Geo News programme, the senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader stated that if Imran Khan offered a a wholehearted apology for the May 9 riots then it was possible that he could be released from prison.
On May 9, 2023, protestors belonging to PTI led violent protests and vandalism including attacks against military installations in major cities after Imran Khan was arrested in a corruption case.
The government has constantly blamed Imran Khan and his party over deliberately undertaking violent riots across the country to spread anarchy, an allegation which the party denies.
Senior journalist Saleef Safi asked Sanaullah that whether there is a chance that political deadlock could end in Pakistan.
The former interior minister replied: “I think that if he apologises over May 9, then talks can proceed, or maybe we can talk.”
He also remarked: “Khan had pushed the country into a political deadlock. He thought he could bring about a revolution through his actions. But no, there are no chances of a revolution. Only political struggles will lead to victory here.”
It merits a mention that earlier this week, Rana Sanaullah also commented that the government would have no objections if the courts release former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
PTI is gearing up to launch an anti-government campaign after Eidul Fitr while also reaching out to opposition parties for their support.
Ever since PTI-government talks failed to materialise, the opposition party has once again taken a defensive position, arguing that founder PTI must be released from prison.
