Rahul Gandhi says Modi can’t confront Trump due to Adani link

Webdesk: Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unable to push back against US President Donald Trump, despite the latter repeatedly threatening India with higher tariffs on trade.

In a post shared on platform X, the Congress MP said: “India, please understand: The reason PM Modi cannot stand up to President Trump despite his repeated threats is the ongoing US investigation into Adani.” He added that “Modi’s hands are tied” because of the inquiry surrounding the Adani Group.

The remarks come amid fresh tensions in US-India trade relations. Trump, who has already imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods entering the US, has now warned of raising it “very substantially” in the next 24 hours.

Speaking to CNBC on Tuesday, he accused India of not being a fair trading partner and criticised its close energy ties with Russia.

Trump said, “India has not been a good trading partner, because they do a lot of business with us, but we don’t do business with them… They have the highest tariffs of anybody.”

In a strongly worded message on Truth Social, Trump went further, accusing India of making profits from Russian oil while ignoring the war in Ukraine.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!” he wrote.

These developments have sparked criticism from the Indian opposition, with Rahul Gandhi suggesting that the Modi government’s silence is linked to deeper concerns about the fallout from the US probe into Adani’s global business dealings.
