LAHORE: Punjab University has successfully freed hostel space for 600 students after launching a major operation to remove illegal residents from its hostels in Lahore. This move comes as part of a wider effort by the university administration, working in collaboration with local police, to improve campus life and ensure fair hostel allotments.

According to the university’s spokesperson, hundreds of unauthorized occupants were evicted during the crackdown. These individuals had been living in hostels without any official approval. As a result, the administration has already assigned rooms to 300 morning students and plans to allot space to another 300 students from far-off areas soon.

The spokesperson revealed that hostel staff are working even on weekends to process the new allotments quickly. The operation also uncovered serious issues. Alcohol and drugs, including crystal meth (“ice”), were found in several rooms during the raids. The university claimed that certain student organizations were behind these illegal hostel occupations.

Punjab University had been suffering heavy financial losses due to these unauthorised residents. Many were using inverter air conditioners, heaters, and other high-power appliances, which caused damage to the university’s budget. In addition, the university lost around Rs20 million every year in unpaid hostel dues.

Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali, the administration took strict and equal action against all unlawful residents. Some student groups, who had control over hostel rooms, are now unhappy and pressuring the university to allow those removed back in or to give space to evening students.

However, Punjab University made it clear that hostel facilities are only meant for morning students and are allotted based on merit and need. The administration added that no university in the world is required to provide accommodation for all students. PU already offers the most affordable hostel option, charging just Rs2,000 per month.
