WEBDESK: The Punjab government has officially announced the summer holidays for school students, starting from June 1, 2025. The decision comes as temperatures continue to rise, posing a health risk to students and teachers.

According to officials, if the extreme heat persists or worsens, the summer holidays for school might begin even earlier. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather to ensure the safety of everyone.

“If temperatures increase unusually, holidays could begin a week earlier,” Wattoo said. “This step prioritises the health of students, teachers and parents, as intense heat can severely impact educational activities.”

Earlier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department issued a heatwave alert, forecasting soaring temperatures across the country from April 26-30 due to the arrival of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere.

Until the holidays begin, authorities have also been urged to ensure uninterrupted access to clean drinking water in schools and colleges, prohibit outdoor activities, and instruct students to wear light, loose-fitting clothing.

Additionally, the PDMA has called for improved classroom ventilation, functioning fans and cooling systems, and the establishment of first-aid counters staffed with heatwave-trained personnel.

The move to announce summer holidays for school early was made after consulting weather reports and health experts. Rising temperatures across the region have raised concerns about the well-being of students who would otherwise be exposed to intense heat during school hours.

Last year, in 2024, the Punjab government announced summer holidays from May 22 to August 14. This year, the exact dates will be known once they are officially notified.

Meanwhile, the Education Department has asked school administrations to strictly follow safety measures until the break begins. Officials warned that failure to comply could lead to action against the schools.
