LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sanam Javed arrested once again on Monday. This time, she was taken into custody along with her husband, Professor Atiq Ahmed, near Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.
Sanam Javed arrested during a police operation in the Green Town area. According to officials, both Sanam Javed and her husband were wanted in cases related to the May 9 violent protests, which involved charges of arson and vandalism. Police also stated that terrorism cases had been filed against the couple.
This is not the first Sanam Javed arrest incident. Back on July 14, 2024, Sanam Javed arrested by Islamabad Police, was shortly after being released by a district and sessions court. She had just secured her freedom when law enforcement officials re-arrested her outside the court premises.
Witnesses reported that during the recent Sanam Javed arrest, a large number of police vehicles surrounded Kot Lakhpat Jail, and the couple was quickly taken into custody. The police have yet to issue an official statement explaining the latest arrests. After being detained, Sanam Javed and her husband were moved to an undisclosed location.
Previously, Islamabad’s District and Sessions Court, under Duty Judge Malik Muhammad Imran, had rejected a request for a six-day remand of Sanam Javed and had approved her release. However, within minutes of her release, she faced re-arrest, which raised concerns among political circles and human rights activists.
