WEBDESK: Prof Adib Rizvi has received the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Special Recognition Award for his outstanding contribution to medical sciences in South Asia. This award honours his outstanding work in medical science, especially in the fields of urology and organ transplantation.

The BMJ is a leading British medical journal which honours medical professionals, researchers and intuitions every year for their exceptional services in the field of medical sciences.

Prof Adib Rizvi is a distinguished Pakistani transplant surgeon, humanitarian, and the founder of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). The SIUT began in 1970 with just eight beds at Karachi’s Civil Hospital. Over time, it has grown into South Asia’s largest center for kidney and liver diseases, offering free medical care to over a million patients every year.

The award was announced at a ceremony held in New Delhi. The award was accepted on Dr Rizvi’s behalf by Dr Sanjay Nagra, co-chair of the BMJ Advisor Board.

Dr Nagra praised Prof Adib Rizvi’s efforts in establishing a healthcare system offering free, accessible, and equitable treatment in Pakistan, calling it a model for developing nations.

Prof Adib Rizvi addressed the audience through zoom, since he was absent from the event. Dr Rizvi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the journal for its immense contribution towards the promotion of medical education and allied research.

He said political animosities should be set aside for the betterment and well-being of the deprived population.

Dr. Rizvi has been a staunch advocate for ethical medical practices. His efforts led to the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act in 2010, which made cadaver organ donation legal and helped stop the illegal organ trade.

Previously, Dr Adib Rizvi has received numerous awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1998), Lifetime Achievement Award by The Sindh Association of North America (2015), and one of Pakistan’s highest civilian awards, the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (2018).
