WEBDESK: Pope Francis, the 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church, died on Monday morning in the Vatican after suffering a stroke and heart failure. The Argentine-born pontiff passed away at 7:35 a.m. local time in his Vatican residence, just a day after appearing in public during Easter celebrations in St. Peter’s Square.
Pope Francis had been dealing with health issues in recent months. He was hospitalised for double pneumonia but returned to his duties soon after against his doctors advice. Despite his health concerns, he continued to meet people and even participated in Easter celebrations just one day before his passing. His official death certificate also mentioned that he had Type 2 diabetes, which had not been shared publicly before.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo, announced the pope’s death and now oversees Church operations until a new leader is elected.
Pope Francis made history as the first Latin American pope and brought significant changes to the Catholic Church. He was known for his humility, reform efforts, and for standing with the poor and marginalised. He worked to make the Church more open and modern, and addressed issues like sexual abuse and social justice.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who is now leading the Church temporarily, said Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, as per his final wish, instead of the traditional burial site in St. Peter’s Basilica.
Cardinals in Rome will convene Tuesday to begin funeral planning and discuss the nine-day mourning period known as Novendiales.
The pope’s body is expected to be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica by Wednesday for public viewing.
Thousands are expected to visit St. Peter’s Basilica, where the pope’s body will be placed for public viewing. Global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentina’s President Javier Milei, are expected to attend the funeral later this week.
Cardinal Michael Czerny said, “Pope Francis died with the smell of the sheep on him,” honouring his close connection with ordinary people.
