Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced on Wednesday that Pakistan’s national Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy is likely to be approved soon, following a year of consultations both domestically and internationally.

Speaking at a seminar at Quaid-i-Azam University, the minister said the policy reflects Pakistan’s growing commitment to digital innovation and future technologies. She confirmed that the government has completed the groundwork for the AI framework and is now shifting focus toward implementation.

AI policy to focus on action and collaboration

“Our main focus now is on putting the policy into action,” the minister stated. “We want everyone to join this journey and help bring the ideas to life.” She urged universities, researchers, and private sector stakeholders to actively contribute to the success of the initiative.

The national AI policy aims to guide the ethical and responsible development of artificial intelligence technologies in Pakistan. It addresses areas such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and governance; promising to introduce AI solutions for public service improvement and economic growth.

Once approved, the policy is expected to provide clear direction on capacity building, infrastructure development, and data protection standards. The government hopes this will also attract foreign investment and partnerships in Pakistan’s tech sector.

The Ministry of IT has also been in discussions with global AI experts and institutions to ensure the framework is in line with international standards while reflecting local needs and values.

The minister’s announcement comes at a time when countries worldwide are racing to establish regulatory and strategic frameworks for AI, with Pakistan aiming to position itself among the early adopters in the developing world.
