Pakistani dramas should go global through Netflix, says Ahsan Iqbal

Pakistani dramas

Pakistani dramas on Netflix is the vision Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal shared on Monday, calling for Pakistani dramas to reach major platforms like Netflix and Amazon.

He said the entertainment sector has the potential to go global and needs support to secure international visibility.

At a roundtable in Karachi with producers and directors, the minister pressed for fresh ideas and modern storytelling.

The meeting brought together director Nadeem Baig, producer Satish Anand, and actress Hina Khawaja Bayat.

The focus was on revitalising the industry through innovation and stronger production standards.

Pakistani dramas on Netflix: industry potential, modern narratives, next steps

Iqbal pointed to Pakistan’s rich cultural and artistic history in music, arts, and television.

He noted that Pakistani dramas enjoy wide respect abroad but remain missing from global digital platforms.

Stakeholders were urged to plan for platform readiness, including consistent quality control, clear rights management, and delivery in formats accepted by international services.

The conversation also touched on the slowdown in film production. Only a few titles reach cinemas each year.

Filmmakers were encouraged to develop new storylines and to move away from repeated plots and demoralising portrayals that limit audience appeal.

The aim is to build content that can travel across regions while staying rooted in local identity.

The ministry signalled an interest in practical steps that support exports. Industry voices called for simpler approvals, support for training, and better links with international distributors.

Stronger measures against piracy and clear data on audiences can also make Pakistani pitches more convincing to global platforms.

The message from Karachi was direct. Build modern content, meet international standards, and move with confidence.

With a coordinated push, Pakistani dramas on Netflix can turn from a goal into a milestone for the country’s creative economy.
