The 2025 Champions Trophy, meant to be a grand homecoming for Pakistani cricket, unfortunately ended up highlighting some painful truths. While we successfully hosted the event after a long wait, the on-field and some off-field aspects left a lot to be desired.

The initial excitement of hosting a major ICC tournament was undeniable. However, the forced hybrid format, with all India matches scheduled in Dubai, diluted the overall experience, also giving India an unfair advantage of getting accustomed to a single venue.

The energy in the Pakistani stadiums was initially vibrant, but it began to decrease as the tournament progressed, especially after team Pakistan’s disappointing performance.

Green shirts failed to live up to the expectations of their passionate fans, bowing out of the tournament with a series of lackluster displays. This wasn’t just a bad patch, it exposed deeper flaws in the team’s strategy & overall preparation. This poor showing brought into question the coaching, leadership, and the health of Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure.

The tournament, instead of being a celebration, became a stark reminder of the challenges facing Pakistani cricket. It’s a wake-up call that demands serious introspection. The Pakistan Cricket Board needs to address the root causes of the team’s failure, focusing on developing talent from the grassroots & strengthening the domestic cricket.

Without significant changes, the 2025 Champions Trophy will be remembered as a missed opportunity, a moment that highlighted the gap between the nation’s love for cricket and the team’s ability to compete at the highest level. There’s an immediate need for action and reform.
