WEBDESK: In a strong message to the international community, PM Shehbaz Sharif has made it clear that Pakistan will not compromise on its fair share of water.
Speaking at the International Conference on Glaciers Preservation 2025 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Friday, PM Shehbaz stressed that water is a serious national issue, and any attempt to undermine Pakistan’s water rights will not be accepted.
His remarks come in response to India’s recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a key water-sharing agreement between the two countries. PM Shehbaz said that such a unilateral decision is “deeply regrettable” and threatens peace in the region. He warned that water should never be used as a political weapon, as it affects the lives of millions of people.
During his speech, PM Shehbaz also highlighted the importance of glaciers to Pakistan’s water system. He explained that Pakistan is home to one of the largest glaciated areas outside the polar regions. These glaciers supply almost half of the annual flow of the Indus River, which plays a crucial role in agriculture and the national economy.
The premier also called for enhanced global action to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change.
The Prime Minister called on developed countries to step up and fulfill their promises on climate financing. He emphasized the need for stronger infrastructure, early warning systems, and better disaster response to deal with the challenges of climate change.
He said the five great rivers that shape our geographical landscape: Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej depend on the stability of glacial system, emphasizing that this makes Pakistan one of the most vulnerable countries to any climatic changes that impact glaciers.
PM Shehbaz said Pakistan has witnessed firsthand the peril of glacial melt due to the climate change. Referring to 2022 devastating floods, he said that glacier melt in our region is expected to accelerate. He emphasized that no country has more at stake in ensuring the preservation of glaciers than Pakistan.
Shehbaz Sharif said we must recognize that water transcends political boundaries, connecting communities and sustaining eco systems and cultures.
PM Shehbaz concluded his address by reaffirming that Pakistan will firmly defend its water rights. He urged international partners to support the country’s efforts in environmental protection and water resource management.
