Webdesk: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rain, wind, and thunderstorms in several parts of the country, including Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northeast Balochistan starting Thursday, according to the latest Pakistan weather update.
Some areas are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, the Pothohar region, northeast Punjab, and Kashmir. Meanwhile, the southern regions will continue to face hot and humid weather conditions.
As per the latest weather alert, strong rains tonight and throughout July 24 could lead to flash flooding in local streams and nullahs in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab.
Districts at risk include Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, as well as Murree, Galliyat, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Flash floods may also occur in the hill torrents of D.G. Khan and areas of northeast Punjab and Kashmir.
The heavy downpour may also trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Okara, Nowshera and Peshawar. In hilly terrain such as Murree, Galliyat, parts of KP, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, landslides or mudslides could block roads and disrupt movement.
The Met Office has also warned that strong winds, heavy rainfall and lightning could damage vulnerable structures like makeshift houses, old walls, electricity poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels during this period.
The synoptic overview shows a seasonal low over northwest Balochistan, with moisture from the Arabian Sea reaching the upper parts of the country. A westerly wave is also impacting northern regions.
