Pakistan Railways is set to launch a new business class train on Friday, 19 July. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will inaugurate the service at Lahore Railway Station.
The train is an upgraded version of the Pak Business Express, which runs between Lahore and Karachi.
The train will now have 28 new coaches imported from China. These coaches have digital screens, free Wi-Fi, reclining seats, and a modern dining car. Railway officials say these coaches meet international standards. However, it is still unclear if ticket prices will change.
Pakistan railways looks to attract more passengers
In the last financial year, around 42 million people travelled with Pakistan Railways. Most people in Pakistan still travel by road. Buses and private cars make up nearly 91% of all passenger travel. Around 7.6 million people used domestic flights last year.
With this upgrade, Pakistan Railways hopes to attract more passengers. Free Wi-Fi, better seating, and improved dining are expected to draw people who prefer to travel by bus or car.
The new train is also part of a wider plan to modernise the railway system. Pakistan Railways is working to improve online ticket booking and live tracking apps.
Escalators have also been installed at Lahore Station to help passengers, especially those with heavy luggage or difficulty walking.
Experts say better coaches are a good step, but more needs to be done. Delays and old tracks are still big problems. Even so, the new train is seen as a sign that Pakistan Railways is moving in the right direction.
All eyes are now on 19 July. People will be watching to see if the new business train offers a better travel experience. If successful, similar trains could be introduced on other routes across the country.
