WEBDESK: In response to increasing Pakistan-India tensions, Pakistan’s civil and military leadership is set to brief top political leaders on Sunday. The briefing comes days after the deadly April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which left 26 Indian tourists dead.
According to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), the briefing will be led by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry. It will focus on the current national security situation, especially concerning escalating friction with India.
India has blamed Pakistan for the attack, a claim strongly denied by Islamabad. In light of these Pakistan-India tensions, the government and military aim to update political stakeholders on the national security situation and discuss the country’s response strategy.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and DG ISPR Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry will lead the high-level session to address the Pakistan-India tensions. According to officials, the goal is to ensure all political parties are informed and aligned on Pakistan’s stance and efforts to maintain peace in the region.
In a related move, President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned the National Assembly emergency session on Monday evening, where lawmakers are expected to formally condemn India’s threat to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, a decades-old water-sharing agreement between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has already rejected India’s accusations and demanded a neutral, joint investigation into the Pahalgam incident. He said Pakistan is focused on peace and regional cooperation and warned that baseless accusations only add fuel to the fire of Pakistan-India tensions.
“Pakistan has nothing to do with the Pahalgam attack, period,” Dar said at a press briefing. He also demanded a joint investigation based on mutually agreed Terms of Reference (TORs) and questioned the timing of the accusations.
“This situation is being created by India amid Pakistan’s economic stability,” he added.
