WEBDESK: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning about a strong heat wave expected to hit the country starting April 13. Temperatures across most regions, including Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to rise due to a high-pressure system.
According to the PMD, southern parts of the country (Sindh, soutÂhern Punjab and Balochistan) will experience temperatures that are 6 to 8°C above normal between April 14 and 18. In areas like central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, and Kashmir, the rise will be 4 to 6°C above usual.
The PMD said that due to heat wave conditions, general public, especially children, women and senior citizens should take precautionary measures and avoid themselves from direct exposure to sunlight during day time and remain hydrated.
The heat wave is also expected to speed up the melting of snow in northern areas, which could affect water flows in rivers. However, this comes at a time when the country is already facing severe water shortages. Rainfall in the first quarter of 2025 was 41% below average. Punjab and Sindh were hit hardest, with rainfall drops of 92% and 96% respectively.
The Met Office also said that there is also acute shortage of water in the Tarbela and Mangla dams and water in different rivers is flowing at extreme low level.
Water levels in major reservoirs like Tarbela and Mangla dams are worryingly low. Many parts of Sindh and Balochistan are already experiencing moderate to mild drought conditions. Cities like Karachi, Mithi, Turbat, Thatta, and Dadu are among the most affected.
Farmers have also been advised to adjust their crop harvesting schedules and take extra care of their livestock during this heat wave. Wheat harvesting, in particular, could be impacted by the extreme weather.
