WEBDESK: New Zealand secured a 73-run victory against Pakistan in the first ODI of the NZ vs PAK series at McLean Park, Napier. The match, held on March 29, saw the home team dominate with both bat and ball to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a strong total of 344 for 9. Their batting lineup performed consistently, putting pressure on the Pakistan bowlers. Despite efforts from Pakistan’s bowling attack, the hosts managed to cross the 300-run mark, setting a tough target.
Mark Chapman starred with the bat for New Zealand scoring 132 off 111 deliveries while Daryll Mitchell scored 76 runs off 84 deliveries. Muhammad Abbas scored 52 runs on debut against the country of his birth.
Irfan Khan Niazi claimed three wickets off his five over while Haris Rauf was the standout bowler for Pakistan in the NZ vs PAK clash claiming 2 wickets for 38 runs in his 10 overs.
In response, Pakistan started steadily but lost momentum as wickets fell at crucial stages. NZ vs PAK matches have often been competitive, but this time, Pakistan struggled under pressure. Babar Azam was the top scorer for Pakistan, making 78 off 83 balls, but his efforts weren’t enough to chase the massive total.
Salman Ali Agha chipped in with a valuable 58 run innings but his efforts were futile as Pakistan lost six wickets at the end for 21 runs.
Pakistan’s innings saw a steady start, but frequent wickets derailed their chase. The last five overs proved disastrous for Pakistan, as they lost six wickets while managing only 21 runs.
New Zealand’s Nathan Smith played a key role in dismantling Pakistan’s batting order. He took four wickets for 60 runs, while Jacob Duffy contributed with two wickets for 57 runs.
With this win, New Zealand has taken an early advantage in the NZ vs PAK series. The second ODI is scheduled in the coming days (2nd April), where Pakistan will look to bounce back and level the series.
