Director of the Nobel Institute, Kristian Berg Harpviken has criticised Norwegian politician, Geir Lippestad who called for Imran Khan’s nomination for Nobel Prize.
According to him, Lippestad strongly wants a seat in the Storting. And he wants to secure as many votes as possible in the Norwegian-Pakistani community.
Moreover, he said that this may create the false impression that a Norwegian politician has particular influence on who is nominated for – and awarded – the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trust in the award-giving process may be weakened, even if it is based on expert assessments, he added.
In a post on X last week, the Centre Party claims that Imran Khan should now be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination is said to have taken place in collaboration with a person who has the right to nominate.
Is Imran Khan on the nomination list for this year?
The institute can neither confirm nor deny that the nomination took place, as this remains secret for 50 years.
There are many who protest against the fact that Imran Khan could be a worthy candidate for the Peace Prize. But the interesting thing is that many of the reactions we get are very principled and see that this is an abuse of the Peace Prize, says Harpviken.
The deadline for nominations for this year’s Peace Prize was January 31. This means that Imran Khan – if someone with the right to nominate has nominated him – will not be eligible for consideration this year, according to report.
