In yet another setback for Indian diplomacy, US issues tough message to India after the United States Embassy in New Delhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to post a stern travel advisory to Indians, noting that “there is no right to visit the United States.”
The strong message from the United States Embassy came after a video of an Indian student being detained at US airport went viral.
The Indian student was being handcuffed and restrained by multiple US law enforcement officials at Newark Airport in New Jersey.
The video was first shared by an Indian-American, Kunal Jain, on social media platforms with a caption: “I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy.”
The video garnered strong reactions from Indians, with many Indians calling out American authorities for mistreating the Indian student.
The video generated enough backlash from the Indian public that the Indian Embassy in New York had to post a clarification, writing, “We are in touch with local authorities in this regard. The Consulate remains ever committed for the welfare of Indian Nationals.”
Indian social media users have lashed out at US Embassy for issuing the strong advisory, with many users calling the US as the “ally that stabs in the back.”
It merits a mention that Indian social media users have turned against the United States after it refused to back India’s narrative against Pakistan last month.
Indian jingoist media and users became furious when US President Donald Trump announced that he had brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May 2025.
The incident took place against the backdrop of strict immigration policies being implemented by US President Donald Trump.
Under the Trump administration, mass deportations and the cancellation of visas are increasing, particularly for international students inside the US.
Trump’s immigration policies have also led to mass protests in Los Angeles, with the federal government calling the National Guard to clamp down on the violent protests.
Indian social media users are calling for “tit for tat” policies against Americans in India and calling for starting a “boycott against US.”
