No ban on two electricity meters, says power division

electricity meters

The Power Division has rejected circulating reports about a ban on installing two electricity meters, calling them false and misleading.

According to the Power Division spokesperson, such rumours are a deliberate attempt to create public unrest and have no basis in reality.

The Power Division requested the public not to pay attention to such false reports and to cooperate with electricity distribution companies for the proper and transparent use of electricity meters, so that “the rightful recipients receive their due in a timely and fair manner”.

The spokesperson clarified that a second meter can still be obtained for a residential property under existing regulations, provided the space qualifies as a separate portion with its own entrance, circuit, and kitchen.

“It is clarified that a second electricity meter can still be obtained for any residential property under the prevailing laws. According to the NEPRA Consumer Services Manual 2021, any residential unit that consists of a separate portion, separate circuit, separate entrance, and separate kitchen is eligible for the installation of an additional meter,” spokesperson of the Power Division said in a statement.

The Power Division warned that spreading or sharing false information is a punishable offence under the PECA Act.

The spokesperson also urged the public to cooperate with distribution companies for the fair and transparent use of electricity meters, adding that laws to prevent misuse of electricity and undue benefit from subsidies are already in place and fully enforced.
