The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a Rs1.71 per unit reduction in electricity prices for three months, following a request from the federal government. The relief will apply from April to June 2025 and will cover all power consumers, excluding lifeline users.
The decision was issued in writing on Thursday after Nepra held a hearing on the government’s petition earlier this month. During the April 4 session, it was revealed that the Rs7.41 per unit reduction in power tariff announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif included Rs1.71 per unit in relief through the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL).
According to Nepra’s order, the authority had no objection to the government’s proposal as it would not affect the tariffs previously determined by Nepra. The reduction is being facilitated through an additional subsidy funded by the expected revenue from the PDL.
“The Authority has no objection on the instant Motion, as it does not impact Nepra’s determined tariff, since the Government of Pakistan has decided to provide additional subsidy from the expected collection of Petroleum Development Levy,” the decision stated.
The relief will be provided to all consumers of XWDISCOs and K-Electric, with the exception of lifeline consumers. The Ministry of Energy estimated that the government would collect around Rs58.6 billion through the PDL over 3.5 months, which would be used to support the subsidy.
The federal cabinet has already approved the proposal and allowed the Ministry to submit the motion to Nepra, enabling the implementation of the reduced rates starting with electricity bills for April.
