WEBDESK: NDMA Alert: The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), working under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has raised fresh alerts for different parts of the country, warning of possible Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), flash flooding, landslides, and heavy monsoon rain likely to impact both northern and southern regions within the next 24 hours.
The alert comes as a result of several overlapping weather conditions.
A spell of ongoing high temperatures, combined with stronger-than-usual monsoon activity and a westerly weather system, is increasing the chance of dangerous weather events and water-related disasters.
In its advisory on GLOF, the NDMA shared concerns that the recent heat has quickened the pace of glacier and snow melt in the country’s northern belt.
With regular rainfall and storms continuing to affect the area, pressure is mounting on already vulnerable glacial lakes, increasing the chance of sudden and dangerous outbursts.
People living in at-risk areas are being urged to stay alert, follow official advice, and take precautionary steps to stay safe.
The NEOC alert covers regions across Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and the federal capital.
The weather disturbance could bring strong winds capable of damaging fragile rooftops, power lines, electric poles, and weak infrastructure.
Sudden dust storms and poor visibility, especially during rainfall, may also increase the chances of road accidents.
People are being strongly advised to stay away from trees, electric wires, billboards, and loosely built structures that could collapse due to heavy winds.
In the twin cities and across Punjab, areas such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Hafizabad, Narowal, Okara, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Bahawalnagar are all expected to be affected.
Islamabad is also likely to experience similar unstable weather during this window.
Parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Peshawar, Swabi, Abbottabad, Mardan, Charsadda, Swat, Dir, Chitral, Mansehra, Haripur, Malakand, Waziristan, Kohat, Karak, Bannu, Khyber, Mohmand, Kohistan, and Kurram may see rainfall and thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, in Sindh, districts such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Thatta, Jacobabad, Badin, Khairpur, Larkana, Mirpur Khas, and Tharparkar have also been identified as high-risk areas for weather-related impacts.
In AJK, moderate to heavy rain along with thunderstorms is expected in Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Bagh, Haveli, Hattian Bala, and Mirpur.
The NDMA has called on emergency services and local authorities to remain on standby and ensure all necessary preparations are in place.
Travellers and residents in the affected areas are urged to take safety precautions and stay informed. For live updates and official advice, citizens can use the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application
