Police have arrested the security guards who physically assaulted two citizens in Karachi’s Basin Boat area while the main suspect, Nawabzada Shahzain Marri, managed to escape to Balochistan.
On February 27, over a week-old CCTV footage went viral on social media which showed a group of armed men in multiple cars forcibly stopping a Suzuki Alto and attacking the two men present inside the car.
It merits a mention that the incident took place on February 19 while the attack’s video gained social media’s attention recently.
The video began with an SUV deliberately reversing into victim’s car after which multiple armed men came out of two vehicles and brutally assaulted the driver and his companion.
In the video, it was clear that the passenger in the Suzuki Alto exited his vehicle and tried to calm the armed men. However, his efforts bore no fruit as the group of guards started hitting him while another man with a modern rifle went on to open the driver’s door to assault him.
Social media reacted angrily with many users complaining about the alleged lawlessness in the city, with one user commenting: “Pakistan jungle bn gya ha ir din ba din badtar ho rha ha.” (Pakistan has become a jungle, it is getting worse day by day)
Another user commented: “Until when… God above is also watching… 💔 to the rulers… to me… to you.” One social media user wrote: “Unfortunately, no one is safe in Pakistan.”
Following the CCTV footage’s release, the police took a swift action arresting multiple suspects who were involved in the attack.
The victims have been identified as the Deputy Secretary Information of PPP Youth Organisation Karachi Division, Barkat Soomro, and his friend Waqas.
According to South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza, the police raided two locations leading to arrests of two personal guards. At least four automatic rifles were recovered from the suspects.
Both individuals arrested are reportedly security guards of Shahzain Marri who is at large from the law enforcement agencies.
As of now, the police have arrested five individuals in the attack while multiple weapons have been recovered from them.
The Karachi Police have also contacted the Balochistan government for their cooperation in apprehending the main suspect.
