Karachi (Azaad English): The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) 1 Judge who refused to give physical remand of Armaghan – who tortured and killed young Mustafa Amir last month – has found himself in trouble after his judicial powers were terminated on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) 1 judge rejected the police’s request for Armaghan’s physical remand instead sending him on judicial remand.

The decision drew criticism from authorities as Sindh Acting Prosecutor-General Muntazir Mehdi filed revision applications in the Sindh High Court (SHC) against ATC’s orders.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar had sent a letter to the Sindh High Court regarding curtailing the powers of ATC 1 judge. The powers of ATC 1 judge have been transferred to the ATC 3 judge.

Mustafa Amir case timeline

In a grim criminal event, Mustafa Amir – a 23 year old student – went missing on January 6 in Karachi. Police investigations remained slow as it took them almost a month to arrest the prime suspect – Armaghan.

Investigations revealed that Armaghan and Mustafa argued over a girl named Marsha Shahid which led to Armaghan luring Mustafa to his house with intent of killing him. Marsha Shahid left the country on January 12 for the United States while authorities are coordinating with INTERPOL to bring her back to Pakistan.

Mustafa’s body was discovered in an unmarked grave at Hub Balochistan. His body had been burnt badly. On January 11, Hub police received a complaint of a burning car; the police after arriving at the scene found a body in the car as well.

The police raided Armaghan’s residence on February 8 when they faced an intense shootout with the suspect. The shootout led to two officers injury as it took them almost four hours to arrest Armaghan. It was later disclosed that Armaghan had been running a call centre and cryptocurrency scams defrauding foreign citizens. He later confessed to police that he bought time to delete critical evidence from over a dozen laptops present at his residence.

The police also arrested another suspect, Shiraz, on February 14 for his involvement in Mustafa’s murder. Shiraz confessed that Armaghan beat Mustafa and drove his body to Balochistan.
