WEBDESK: A shocking case has emerged from Bilaspur village in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, where a labourer woman, Sakina, and her son, Shafiqur Rahman, were beaten in UP by a BJP leader using slippers and sticks.

Reports indicate that the incident took place on Monday, June 30, in Bilaspur town, located in the Dankaur area of Gautam Buddha Nagar.

The conflict reportedly began with a disagreement between Sakina and another woman in her neighbourhood over the installation of electric wires.

During the heated exchange, Ateeq Pathan, a local BJP leader and Mandal Minister of Kasna Mandal, allegedly intervened.

However, instead of de-escalating the situation, he is accused of assaulting Sakina’s son, Shafiqur Rahman, when the latter attempted to mediate.

According to the complaint, when Sakina stepped in to protect her son, the BJP leader turned on her as well, beating both mother and son with a slipper and a stick.

The victim, Sakina, originally from Assam, has been residing in Bilaspur for the past 15 years and earns her livelihood as a daily wage labourer.

A bystander captured the assault on camera, and the video quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread condemnation and calls for strict action against the accused.

The said incident has sent shock waves through the nation with plenty mentioning that it involves a part of political arrogance, community prejudice besides a certain place of impunity that is believed to go hand in hand with the ruling party members.

There are suspicions on the behavior by the people in authority, especially the ruling BJP.

The incident is reported soon after a massive victory by a senior leader of BJP like Dr Mahesh Sharma in yet a third consecutive term at the newly-formed constituency of Gautam Buddha Nagar Lok Sabha when he won elections during the 2024 general elections.

The critics say this is not a one-off incident but rather a worrying trend since those sympathetic to the BJP have been accused of violence and intimidation with a low probability of punishment.

In a similar incident just days earlier, on June 25, former BJP MLA Radheshyam Patidar was caught on camera physically assaulting a toll plaza manager, Ketan Upadhyay, during a heated argument at the Kherkheda toll booth in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh.

The footage shows Patidar repeatedly slapping and pushing the toll staff while dressed in traditional kurta-pyjama, with no signs of remorse. When confronted, Patidar claimed he was merely “counselling” the staff, accusing them of misbehaving with women, an allegation that remains unverified.

The clash reportedly stemmed from an earlier dispute on June 22, when a tractor linked to Patidar passed the toll without paying.

The driver cited an exemption for agricultural goods, but tensions escalated after toll workers asked for the fee.

Later that day, Patidar’s daughter-in-law, Durga Patidar, who also serves as the District Panchayat President, accused toll staff of misconduct after her vehicle was delayed briefly.

Rather than resolving the matter through legal means, Patidar took it upon himself to confront the staff physically. Despite clear video evidence, no strong disciplinary action appears to have followed.

Observers see these incidents as reflective of a growing culture of VIP arrogance, lawlessness, and abuse of power by political figures.

This is a pattern of violence, which repeats itself with the impoverished citizens, minorities or lower-level employees being victims of violence by those who govern or represent the ruling parties resulting in the people losing trust in the authorities and the police.

As the public demands action and accountability, the question remains: Will the state hold its powerful members to the same standards as ordinary citizens, or will the cycle of violence and impunity continue unchecked?
