Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Kabul on Sunday for a key meeting with Afghan Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani. The main focus of the visit was joint action against terrorism.
Both sides agreed that terrorist groups, especially the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), are a serious threat to peace in the region. They promised to increase cooperation to stop such groups from operating on either side of the border.
Mohsin Naqvi said that terror networks are creating instability and must be stopped. “Terrorist organisations are causing chaos and instability. We must stop them together,” he said during the meeting.
The ministers also discussed how to better manage the Pak-Afghan border. This includes stopping illegal crossings, preventing drug smuggling, and improving legal travel between the two countries.
The meeting comes after several steps taken by both countries to improve ties. These include reviving the Joint Coordination Committee, holding high level talks, and restoring full ambassador level diplomatic posts.
Naqvi was warmly welcomed by Sirajuddin Haqqani at the Afghan Ministry of Interior. The talks also covered the issue of Afghan citizens staying illegally in Pakistan. Naqvi said Pakistan has hosted millions of Afghan refugees for decades, but now only legal migration will be allowed.
“Our doors are open for legal entry of Afghan citizens,” he added. “But the process must be followed.”
The two ministers also discussed better ways to regulate the border, stop infiltration, and act against those who support terror groups.
This visit is being seen as an important step towards peace and security. With rising terror threats in the region, both Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed that close coordination is the only way to stop violence and ensure stability.
