Diplomacy or cowardice? Modi refuses to name Trump while denying foreign ceasefire mediation

Webdesk: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday told parliament that no world leader had asked India to stop its military operation against Pakistan during the recent conflict in May. Once again denying Trump’s claim of mediation in the Pakistan-India ceasefire.

He was speaking during a debate on “Operation Sindoor”, which was launched by India following an attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Without naming US President Donald Trump, Modi said, “No world leader asked us to stop the operation.” His comments came despite repeated claims by Trump that he played a key role in the ceasefire between the two countries.

Modi went on to say that it was actually Pakistan that had urged India to end the fighting after coming under heavy pressure from Indian attacks. According to him, Pakistan “pleaded” for a halt in the military action.

Rahul Gandhi called out Modi on his cowardice. “If PM Modi has the courage of Indira Gandhi, then let him say here in Lok Sabha that you Donald Trump, are a liar and you did not make us ceasefire and no flights were downed,” said Rahul Gandhi, slamming Modi.

TMC MP Sayani Ghosh also called Modi out, stating that Tump has made a joker of him.

Netizens can be seen criticising Modi openly.

The conflict began after a deadly shooting in April in IIOJK, where gunmen opened fire on tourists, killing 26 people. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, but Islamabad denied any involvement.

In the Indian Lok Sabha, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah was seen to be in a state of utter confusion.

He was reading off a written speech and appeared confused over the dates of the event that occurred in Pahalgam on April 22 and the chronology of the investigation.

Several times, he stated he started investigating the case on the night of May 22. Even a fellow member sitting nearby was observed at one stage attempting to correct the Indian Home Minister, reminding him that the bomb attack had occurred on April 22. Nonetheless, Amit Shah continued to say on May 22, 2025.

In May, tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours escalated into a four-day conflict that claimed over 70 lives on both sides. Trump later announced that a ceasefire had been reached. He has since repeated on several occasions that he was responsible for brokering peace between the two countries.

Modi’s comments came after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi challenged him in parliament, asking him to publicly say that “Donald Trump is lying” if the US President’s claim was false.

The brief war in May brought both nations dangerously close to another full-scale conflict. Although Trump declared the ceasefire first, political parties in India later started questioning whether there had been any third-party involvement, something New Delhi has always denied.
