Webdesk: Hindutva-inspired policies of the Modi government are causing mounting inter-communal stress in certain parts of India. There is increased tension between the states of Assam and Nagaland with their distinct ethnic and cultural identities. The divisive method of the ruling BJP is adding to ethnic tensions.
In Assam, the BJP government recently carried out large-scale demolitions and evictions in early July 2025. Approximately 10,000 Bengalis of origin Muslims were forced to leave their homes in Dhubri, Goalpara, and Nalbari districts.
Most of these individuals had spent decades there. Nagaland is another place where this anti-Muslim eviction drive is just starting, and tribal people are becoming extremely anxious about it.
According to The New Indian Express, citizens in Nagaland fear they might receive a wave of displaced people in Assam. In response, the Konyak Students’ Union increased security checks in Mon district. Around 100 volunteers were placed at key entry points, especially in Tizit and Naginimora, to check the documents of those entering the area.
They are inspecting Inner Line Permits (ILPs) and removing anyone without proper identification.
The Union also requested that the government stop issuing new ILPs in Mon for one month. They said this was necessary to protect local people and maintain peace in the region.
According to a statement by the Konyaak Students’ Union: “We appeal to impose a ban on issuing ILP in Mons district for at least a month”
At the same time, the Western Sumi Students’ Union raised its own concerns about the presence of illegal migrants near the Assam-Nagaland border. They said people without permission are settling in border areas, which could lead to conflict and pressure on local communities.
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the evictions. He said the state had taken back 1.29 lakh bighas of land from what he called encroachers, and that the operation would go on.
According to critics, the behavior of the BJP is not only causing religious tensions but also ethnic and inter-state tensions. The escalating crisis and ethnic tensions that started in Assam is now threatening to spill over into the rest of the Northeast, spiraling the region into greater conflict.
This increasing instability and ethnic tensions, as many observers note, can be attributed to the Hindutva-oriented style of governance practiced by the Modi government.
