Use of mobile phones in classrooms banned in colleges across Punjab

LAHORE: The Directorate of Public Instruction (Colleges) on Monday banned use of mobile phones in colleges across Punjab. According to the notification, students and teachers will no longer be allowed to use phones during class.

The ban will be imposed in all the major cities of Punjab including Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faislabad and others.

“It has been reported that teachers and students are extensively using mobile phones during classroom sessions, which is disrupting the learning environment, affecting discipline, and reducing academic focus. The use of mobile phones in class leads to distractions, lower student engagement, academic dishonesty, and non-academic activities such as social media browsing and gaming. Simultaneously, teachers using mobile phones during lectures set a poor precedent, further diminishing student attention and class productivity,’ read the notification issued by director general.

“You are required to issue strict instructions to all the colleges under your jurisdiction to immediately prohibit the use of mobile phones in classrooms by both teachers and students. College administration must ensure strict enforcement of these instructions to maintain an effective and disciplined academic atmosphere,” it added.

The notification further added that non-compliance reported will be dealt with under the relevant rules.

This decision of comes as authorities believe mobile phones are disrupting the classroom environment, diverting attention from studies, and even contributing to academic dishonesty. Many students were reportedly using phones during lectures, affecting their focus and overall learning. To maintain discipline and improve education quality, the mobile phones are banned.

Moreover the teachers using mobile phones during lectures set a poor precedent, further diminishing student attention and class productivity.

According to the letter by Directorate of Public Instruction Punjab College administration must ensure strict enforcement of these instructions to maintain an effective and disciplined academic atmosphere.
