Maulana Hamidul Haq Haqqani, the elder son of the assassinated Maulana Samiul Haq, was born on May 26, 1968, in Akora Khattak, Nowshera district, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan

Hamid was a religious scholar and a politician who served as a member of the 12th National Assembly of Pakistan from 16 November 2002 until 10 October 2007, when he resigned in protest.

He also served as the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Darul Uloom Haqqania and chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) party after his father’s assassination in 2018.

Hamid, the second son of Maulana Samiul Haq’s first wife, received his religious and school education from his grandfather, Maulana Abdul Haq, at the Haqqania High School, which is located within the madrassah, Nowshera.

He completed his Bachelor’s in Islamic Studies from Nowshera Degree College and obtained a Master’s from the Punjab University in Theology in the late 80s. Hamid started his political career by joining the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Sami) student wing Islami Jamiat Taleba as Secretary General in 1985.

In 2001, after the US invasion of Afghanistan, he founded the Defence Afghanistan Council, which later evolved into the  Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), a political alliance of religious parties.

He was also among the few who called on the world and Pakistan to immediately recognise the Taliban government and establish diplomatic relations with Afghanistan after the fall of Kabul in 2021.

On February 28, 2025, a suicide bomb attack occurred at Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akora Khattak on Friday afternoon which killed Maulana Hamid Ul Haq Haqqani.

At least four people were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide blast in madrassah, the provincial government confirmed in a statement.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif expressed sorrow over the incident.

“He was a great religious scholar whose immense services to Islam are unforgettable,” he said. “Maulana Hamidul Haq’s martyrdom is an irreparable loss.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has condemned the blast and condoled the death of JUI-S chief Maulana Hamidul Haq and other victims. He has directed the authorities to ensure all possible medical assistance for the injured.

President Asif Ali Zardari has also strongly condemned the act of targeting worshippers in a suicide attack in Nowshera. He expressed deep sorrow and regret over the loss of innocent lives and called the attack on worshippers a brutal and unforgivable crime.

The president declared that terrorists are “enemies of the country and humanity.” He has prayed for forgiveness for those killed and offered condolences to their families.
