Man who vanished 28 years ago found frozen in Kohistan glacier

A group of friends found a human body in the glaciers of Lady Valley, which appeared to have been preserved for nearly 30 years.

Umar Khan, a livestock trader from Palas, Kohistan, found the body during a summer trip while trekking through the Lady Valley. “The body was completely intact. Even the clothes weren’t torn,” he told an international media outlet.

The group found an ID card with the name “Naseeruddin” on it.

District Police Officer (DPO) Kolai Palas, Amjad Hussain, confirmed the case is 28 years old. He said a man had fallen into the glacier, but no missing person report was ever filed. The inquiry was closed.

Lady Valley is always covered in snow. Locals were shocked by the body’s condition.

Umar Khan said, “People with me immediately recalled the story of Naseeruddin and his family, who had once left Palas due to a family feud and were never seen again after heading toward the glacier.”

Naseeruddin had left behind two children and a widow.

Locals said he was not alone. His younger brother, Kaseeruddin, was with him when they disappeared.

Both were among several residents of Palas who had left due to a family feud.

Retired police officer Abdul Aziz said the family later suffered another tragedy. A brother named Gardeiz was allegedly killed in the name of honour.

“That was a time when accessing Palas was incredibly difficult,” said Aziz. “There were no proper communication networks, and most incidents like this never reached the police. Even families avoided reporting them.”

He added, “Police sometimes learned about such cases through unofficial sources, but without a report from the affected party, we couldn’t intervene.”

The case was officially called an accident. But locals still believe it was connected to the family conflict.
