In a significant development, Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) central organiser Mahrang Baloch has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2025.
Journalist Kiyya Baloch took to X (formerly Twitter) today to post: “Breaking News: Prominent Baloch rights activist Mahrang Baloch nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. This year, there are 338 candidates, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations nominated. Dr. Baloch was nominated for her fight for human rights in Balochistan.”
It merits a mention that the Nobel Committee, who nominate individuals around the world for the renowned accolade, does not confirm the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves.
However, the nominators can choose to share the information individually which is how Mahrang Baloch’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize has been revealed.
Journalist Kiyya Baloch later disclosed the reason for Mahrang’s nomination, which was revealed to him by the nominator themselves.
“Dr Mahrang Bakoch’s activism stands apart in Pakistan’s 74-year history, where no woman has led a rights movement on this scale. While former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto led massive political rallies in 1988 and 2007, her struggle was largely for political power,” stated the nominator according to journalist Kiyya Baloch’s post.
It further added: “Dr Mahrang Baloch’s struggle is rooted in a fight for justice, human rights, and dignity for maginalised communities. As a young woman from a conservative tribal society where public life is dominated by men, Mahrang is a hope for women and marginalised groups across Pakistan and South Asia.”
Mahrang Baloch also confirmed the development on X, saying: “Media personnel have been reaching out to me about this news, and I can confirm that it is true. I am deeply honored by this nomination.”
She further added that this honour is not for her but for the thousands of people protesting for their human rights across the country.
It should be highlighted that there are only two Pakistanis who have won the Nobel Prize in history i.e., Dr Abdus Salam (1979) and Malala Yousafzai (2014).
