WEBDESK: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken a strong stand against the begging mafia operating across Punjab. In a recent hearing, the court expressed concern over the growing number of organized beggars, many of whom are controlled by criminal groups that force vulnerable people, including children, into begging.
Justice Shahid Karim of the LHC has directed authorities to fully implement the Anti-Begging Act and take legal action against those exploiting others for money. He emphasized that the begging mafia not only takes advantage of the poor but also poses a serious social issue that needs urgent attention.
Mobile App to Report Begging Mafia Activities
In a major step forward, the court ordered the creation of a mobile application that will allow the public to report cases of professional beggars and their handlers. This app is expected to help track activities linked to the begging mafia and assist law enforcement in identifying repeat offenders and key players behind the scenes.
Rehabilitation Centres
The court highlighted that it is important to get these existing rehabilitation centers and shelter homes working again. These facilities give people involved in begging access to other safe and dignified ways to live. According to Justice Karim, it isn’t sufficient to remove beggars alone; they also need help and support to improve their lives.
Three-Month Deadline for Authorities
The LHC was not satisfied with the current efforts by authorities and asked for a detailed, revised report on the matter. Officials have been given a three-month deadline to show real progress. During the hearing, the court also ordered that First Information Reports (FIRs) be filed against anyone forcing minors or the disabled into begging a common tactic used by the begging mafia to earn sympathy and money.
