LAHORE: The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has launched a major upgrade across Lahore and nearby areas by installing new smart meters and improving safety systems. The LESCO smart meters Lahore project is part of a five-year business plan aimed at reducing electricity theft and improving overall power supply.
To target electricity theft, LESCO has started using scanning meters and aerial bundled cables in areas with high theft rates. These areas include parts of Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, and Nankana Sahib. This move is a major step forward in the fight against illegal electricity use.
The company has also improved infrastructure to support the new meters and safety efforts. LESCO has built seven new 132kV grid stations, upgraded 16 transformers, and improved over 116 kilometers of power lines. Over 4,000 new transformers have also been installed.
LESCO has taken strict action against internal issues as well. Around 1,400 employees have faced disciplinary action for corruption and negligence, including 97 high-ranking staff members.
Transformer reclamation workshops in Kasur and Sheikhupura have also helped save around Rs100 million annually, showing LESCO’s focus on efficiency and cost-cutting.
Benefits of LESCO Smart Meters Lahore:
The LESCO smart meters Lahore program also focuses on safety improvements. The company has installed insulated conductors in important areas like GOR, Cantt, Johar Town, and Gulberg. These upgrades help prevent accidents and ensure safer electricity distribution.
In addition to these measures, LESCO has created a new Health, Safety, and Environment Directorate. This team is responsible for maintaining better working conditions and improving safety standards for both workers and residents.
LESCO Smart Meters Lahore Project Progress:
Under this initiative, LESCO is installing 535,000 smart meters in total, with 55,000 already in place. These smart meters are helping reduce losses and improve billing accuracy. So far, LESCO has recovered Rs4.23 billion from detection bills and Rs35.12 billion from private defaulters.
