KARACHI: Karachi is currently in the grip of an intense heatwave, with the Karachi temperature expected to rise above 40 degrees Celsius today, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The sweltering heat is causing concern for public health, especially for children, the elderly, and those working outdoors.
The PMD reports that while the Karachi temperature may hit 40°C, it could feel even hotter due to high humidity and light winds. Southwesterly winds are currently blowing at about 11 km/h, offering little relief.
This hot spell is part of a larger weather pattern affecting southern Pakistan. Cities like Jacobabad and Turbat have seen extreme temperatures nearing 47°C. However, the situation in Karachi is particularly worrying because of the dense population and humidity levels.
Doctors urge everyone to avoid spending time outdoors during the warmest part of the day. They say it’s best to stay hydrated, limit your time outdoors and wear clothes in light tones and that fit loosely. Doctors recommend using umbrellas, hats and sunglasses when outdoors as a way to shield from the sun.
People should be careful because heatstroke is a risk right now. One way to prevent dehydration is to shower with cool water, drink oral rehydration solutions and cut back on heavy meals. When you have symptoms such as dizziness, headache or nausea, it’s necessary to get medical help quickly.
Temperatures in Karachi will be high over the next several days. Things will continue to be extra hazy and temperatures will reach between 41°C and 43°C day by day. Lows during the night will remain high, at around 29°C to 30°C.
Because it’s getting hotter in Karachi, its important to take precautions and pay attention to ourselves and our family members. Staying hydrated, staying away from the sun and heeding health warnings can really benefit you now.
