WEBDESK: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has announced that it will observe Dr AQ Khan day tomorrow on Wednesday May 28 to pay tribute to the late Dr AQ Khan, Pakistan’s renowned nuclear scientist. The day is set to celebrate Dr Khan’s important role in making Pakistan a nuclear power.

The announcement was made by JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman during an event organized by the Alkhidmat Foundation in Sahiwal. Rehman described Dr AQ Khan as the ‘architect’ of Pakistan’s nuclear program, highlighting how his work has made the country’s defense system strong and secure.

Rehman also criticized those who have tried to downplay Dr Khan’s achievements in the past. He said while some people have tried to erase Dr Khan’s legacy, their efforts have failed and his contributions continue to be remembered and respected.

According to Rehman, marking Dr AQ Khan day is a way to ensure the nation never forgets the scientist’s sacrifices and achievements.

The date chosen for Dr AQ Khan day is significant because it relates to Pakistan’s nuclear tests in 1998, a historic moment that made Pakistan the seventh country in the world to successfully test nuclear weapons. Dr Khan played a key role in this success, and the day honors his leadership in that milestone.

Apart from the speeches, thousands of students in Sahiwal joined tests for free IT and computer courses arranged by the Alkhidmat Foundation. As a result, the foundation and JI have supported education and encouraged skill development in Pakistan in addition to remembering heroes such as Dr Khan.

At the event, Alkhidmat Foundation’s Secretary-General, Waqas Anjum Jafri, spoke about the need to join national pride with focused efforts on improving the education of young people.

By setting aside Dr AQ Khan day, Jamaat-i-Islami joins in celebrating Pakistan’s national heroes and encourages young people to follow their example.

May 28 is observed in Pakistan as Youm-e-Takbeer, marking the day the country became a nuclear power. It celebrates Pakistan’s successful nuclear tests conducted in 1998, showcasing its defense strength and scientific progress.

Youm-e-Takbeer demonstrates Pakistan’s strong dedication to guarding its nation and freedom. Various ceremonies and events are being held in different cities to pay tribute to the scientists and military members involved in the mission.

The federal government of Pakistan has announced a public holiday on May 28, 2025, to observe Youm-e-Takbeer.
