Eyal Zamir has been appointed as Israel’s new military chief amidst looming uncertainties about the expired ceasefire in Gaza.
Former Israeli army chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi resigned in January admitting his failure regarding the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel.
Uncertainties abound as the army chief, Eyal Zamir, asserted that he was ready for the challenge ahead, stating: “Hamas has indeed suffered a severe blow … it has not yet been defeated. The mission is not yet accomplished.”
Israel proposed a new ceasefire plan this week, different from the previous one in January which was agreed by Israel and Hamas for the cessation of hostilities and return of hostages.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to it as the “Witkoff proposal”, noting that it came from US President Donald Trump’s Mideast envoy, Steve Witkoff.
The new proposal comes after the first phase of the carefully negotiated ceasefire ended earlier, while the second phase of the settlement remains unclear.
Israel is trying to force Hamas to accept the new proposal of ceasefire as it halted complete food, fuel, and medicine supplies to Gaza.
Arab leaders, meanwhile, are finalising a separate plan for Gaza after the deadly war to counter Trump’s egregious relocation plan. Under Trump’s proposed plan, the native population would be relocated to transform the region into a tourist destination.
All fighting in Gaza has been halted since January after a ceasefire was brokered by Qatar and Egypt, along with the United States which led to the exchange of some Israeli hostages for about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
As of now, Hamas still has 59 more Israeli captives which Israel is attempting to bring back.
