The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has postponed the annual examinations for classes XI and XII, originally scheduled for April 28, 2025. The exams, including those for the pre-engineering, pre-medical, and science general groups, will now begin on or after May 6.
As a result of this delay, the second phase of the examinations—which includes Commerce and Arts groups—will also start later than planned. Officials have attributed the postponement to several factors, such as the unavailability of examination centres, revisions in first-year results following the awarding of grace marks, and the absence of a board chairman, which has hampered exam preparations.
A senior official from the Universities and Boards Department informed The Express Tribune that matriculation exams being conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Karachi will continue until May 2. Many of the centres currently in use for matric exams are also designated for Intermediate exams. Once matric exams conclude, these centres will be reallocated for Intermediate use. The revisions in first-year results due to grace marks were also noted as a contributing factor to the delay.
Initially, according to the Department of Education’s Steering Committee, matric exams in Sindh were set to begin on March 15, with Intermediate exams to follow on April 8. However, as the dates neared, private school associations expressed concern over students having to appear for exams during Ramazan. In response, the Steering Committee held another meeting and approved a revised schedule, pushing matric exams to April 8, after Eidul Fitr, with Intermediate exams to begin the same day.
With this latest delay, Intermediate students will now have to sit for exams in the intense summer heat, a recurring issue in recent years. Furthermore, the postponed schedule is expected to disrupt the timely release of results, affecting university admissions and the commencement of the new academic year.
