In a shocking development, an Indian prisoner in Karachi’s Malir District jail committed suicide last week.

According to details, Gaurav, son of Ram Anand, asked the prison authorities for visiting washroom facilities, where he hung himself.

Malir District Jail authorities have revealed that further investigations are being held regarding the suicide of foreign prisoner in Malik district jail.

The Indian prisoner was transferred to the District Jail on 17 February, 2022. Meanwhile, the prisoner’s dead body has been transferred to Sohrab Goth morgue.

According to Superintendent District Jail Malir Arshad Shah, the suicide incident occurred on the intervening night of March 24 and 25.

Shah further said that after the death was confirmed by the jail doctors, the body was transferred to Jinnah Hospital for legal proceedings. A post-mortem will be conducted under the supervision of a magistrate.

The Superintendent of District Jail also said that consultations were ongoing with the consulate regarding Gaurav’s documents and nationality. Gaurav was kept with other Indian prisoners, and the accused rarely communicated.

Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs exchanged, through diplomatic channels, the lists of prisoners in each other’s custody in January 2025.

Both countries exchange a list of prisoners in each other’s custody on 1st January and 1st July every year under a mutual agreement.

The Government of Pakistan handed over a list of 266 Indian prisoners in Pakistan (49 civilian prisoners and 217 fishermen) to a representative of the High Commission of India in Islamabad.

Simultaneously, the Government of India shared the list of Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails to an officer of Pakistan High Commission, New Delhi. According to the list, there are a total of 462 Pakistanis in Indian jails (381 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen).
