WEBDESK: Indian media and political class erupted in outrage on Thursday after US President Donald Trump hosted Field Marshal Asim Munir, for lunch at the White House, a moment widely seen as a diplomatic embarrassment for India.
The Congress attacked the Indian government after US President Donald Trump hosted Field Marshal Asim Munir for lunch at the White House, saying it was a “huge blow” to Indian diplomacy.
Jairam Ramesh called it a huge blow to Indian diplomacy mocking Prime Minister Modi’s fondness for personal rapport with world leaders.
He stated that Field Marshal Asim Munir is neither head of state nor government, yet was praised and hosted by Trump.
In a post on X he stated, “Field Marshal Asim Munir is neither the head of state nor the head of government. He is the army chief of Pakistan. Yet President Trump invited him to lunch at the White House and praised him profusely.
This is the same man whose inflammatory and objectionable statements led to the barbaric terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22nd – perpetrated by the same military apparatus he heads.
This is a big setback for Indian diplomacy (hug diplomacy too)!”
Trump, while addressing media in the Oval Office, said he was honoured to meet Munir and lauded both India and Pakistan for preventing a potentially nuclear war.
Indian media has also been seen to be in ‘panic mode’, as some netizens noted.
“Wake up Modi ji! Global isolation is not a foreign policy. It is a disastrous failure,” Indian media slammed.
Indian media also criticized Modi for elbowing his way through the group photos at the G7, seemingly desperate to get noticed
Online, Indian netizens fumed, even accusing Trump of being an opportunist.
Despite India’s efforts to isolate Pakistan, the visit marks a strategic gain for Pakistan, highlighting its continued relevance in Washington despite the attempts at spreading misleading propaganda.
