In a significant development, India on Saturday betrayed Iran by siding with Israel after it refused to support the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) condemnation of Israeli aggression against Iran.

On June 14, the SCO sharply criticised Israel’s military offensive on Iran, raising alarm over the growing instability in the Middle East.

“This seriously violated the principles of international law and the U.N. Charter, undermined Iran’s sovereignty, undermined regional and international security, and had a serious impact on global peace and stability,” the SCO warned.

The group said it “strongly condemns” the strikes and called for restraint to prevent further escalation.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) quickly issued a clarification, writing, “India’s own position on the matter had been articulated by us on 13 June 2025, and remains the same. We urge that channels of dialogue and diplomacy be utilised to work towards de-escalation and it is essential that the international community undertake endeavours in that direction.”

India’s ministry further said, “The External Affairs Minister too discussed this matter with his Iranian counterpart yesterday and conveyed the deep concern of the international community at the turn of events. He also urged the avoidance of any escalatory steps and an early return to diplomacy.”

“India did not participate in the discussions on the above-mentioned SCO statement,” it concluded.

Since the beginning of Israel-Iran clashes, India had taken a neutral position; however, while the majority of countries, including Saudi Arabia, condemned Israeli actions, India refused to do so.

It merits a mention that India has cordial relations with Iran; however, Indian social media users have resorted to jingoist and extremist narratives against Iran for its positive role in mediating between India and Pakistan during recent clashes.

Indian propagandist and former army officer Gaurav Arya sparked a diplomatic crisis between Tehran and New Delhi as he called the foreign minister of Iran “a pig” for visiting Pakistan on national tv.
