WEBDESK: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has refused to undergo a polygraphic test related to the violent protests that took place on May 9, 2023.
A police team from Lahore, along with experts from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency, had arrived at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to conduct the test. However, Khan declined, saying he would not proceed without his lawyers present.
The polygraphic test which many call a lie detector test, was meant to use to support investigators in verifying Khan’s statements linked to May 9. The arrest of the leader last year led his followers to attack military bases, causing upheaval all over Pakistan.

This is not the first time Khan has refused such procedures. He had previously rejected other forensic tests as well, including photogrammetry and voice matching. His legal team maintains that he has the right to refuse any tests without proper legal representation present during the process.
According to legal experts, a polygraphic test is not considered solid evidence in court. The Lahore High Court (LHC) has also questioned its reliability.
In a previous ruling, the court stated that polygraphic tests are only considered expert opinions and are not acceptable as legal proof in criminal cases. The court added that no person can be forced into such procedures if they are not part of a fair legal process.
Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023 and faces over 100 cases, including charges related to terrorism, corruption, and inciting violence. He has denied all allegations, calling them politically motivated and an attempt to keep him out of the political scene.
What is a Polygraph?
A polygraph is a machine that uses technology to detect and measure a person’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing pattern and skin conductivity as they are asked multiple questions. Experts believe that changes in these indicators may indicate whether a person is being honest or not.
What is Polygraphic test?
To perform this test, a polygraph machine is used to monitor whether a person speaks the truth or not. When testing, the subject is questioned in several ways and their body signs and symptoms are carefully observed. Drastic changes in a person’s physiological signs during some questions might be seen by the examiner as an indication of lying.
