WEBDESK: An IMF team is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad today to begin discussions with Pakistani officials on the preparation of the 2025-26 federal budget. This visit is part of Pakistan’s ongoing engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the country continues efforts to stabilize its economy.

According to official sources, the mission will hold meetings with Pakistan’s finance ministry and other key economic departments. The discussions will focus on tax revenue improvements, reducing government expenses, and managing development spending more efficiently.

The IMF visit, starting April 4, is expected to last for about a week. During this time, the missions experts and Pakistani financial authorities will work together to draft budget proposals. These proposals will then be reviewed and finalised ahead of the federal budget presentation, which is likely to take place in the first week of June.

Key points of discussion will include reforms aimed at increasing the tax net, cutting non-essential expenditures, and ensuring that development projects are prioritised within available resources. These areas are seen as essential for Pakistan to meet its economic targets under the current IMF program.

This visit is considered an important milestone in Pakistan’s financial planning, as the country seeks to secure continued support from the IMF and other global institutions. Earlier last month, the IMF had approved Rs1 per unit cut in electricity tariff in the country.

The outcome of this week’s talks will play a key role in shaping the direction of the country’s economy in the next fiscal year.
