ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is currently experiencing a severe heatwave that is expected to continue until April 27, 2025, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The high-pressure system that developed in mid April has caused temperatures to soar across much of the country, particularly in the southern and central regions.

Jacobabad recorded the highest temperature in the past 24 hours at a scorching 43°C. Other cities such as Mithi, Bahawalnagar, and Nawabshah reported 42°C, while Karachi reached 41°C. Lahore and Islamabad are also feeling the impact of the heatwave, recording 38°C and 36°C respectively.

Morning temperatures showed some relief with Islamabad at 17°C and Lahore at 24°C, but they are expected to climb significantly during the day. Karachi began the day at 26°C, and the temperature is likely to spike again as sea breezes remain suspended.

The Met Office has warned that conditions will remain hot and dry in most parts of the country, particularly in Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan. Daytime temperatures may remain 6 to 8°C above normal in these areas. The public is urged to take precautions during this heatwave, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight, and limiting outdoor activities, especially during peak hours.

In contrast, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir may receive light rain, wind, and thunderstorms, offering temporary relief in those regions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the heatwave persists. Health officials advise children, the elderly, and those with medical conditions to remain indoors as much as possible. The NDMA has reiterated that this heatwave will likely last until April 27, and people across the country should stay alert and take necessary safety measures.

With temperatures expected to remain unusually high, the government and weather departments are closely observing the situation and may issue further advisories if needed. Until then, people are encouraged to stay cool and stay safe during this ongoing heatwave.
