WEBDESK: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Pakistan, warning of extreme temperatures in Sindh, South Punjab, and Balochistan from April 26 to April 30.

According to the PMD, a high-pressure system will dominate the upper atmosphere starting today, intensifying heat across most parts of the country from tomorrow.

This heatwave alert in Pakistan comes as the PMD also predicts a temperature rise of 4 to 6°C above normal in Islamabad, central and upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Citizens are being urged to take precautions, including staying indoors during peak hours, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding unnecessary exposure to the sun.

The PMD warned that the heatwave’s intensity is likely to persist until April 30, with relief expected from May 1 as westerly winds bring the possibility of rain and hail to parts of Kashmir, Islamabad, north-east Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Punjab announces early school summer vacations

In response to the growing heat threat, the Punjab Education Department has announced that summer vacations will begin from June 1. Authorities have also stated that if temperatures continue to rise, vacations may start earlier for the safety of school children.

The heatwave alert in Pakistan highlights the country’s ongoing struggle with climate extremes. Experts are warning that such severe weather patterns are becoming more frequent due to climate change. They are calling for urgent steps to improve infrastructure and raise public awareness about heatwave safety.

As the heatwave alert in Pakistan remains in effect, citizens are advised to follow official guidelines and monitor updates from local weather authorities. The government is also preparing emergency medical facilities and cooling centres to support vulnerable communities during this high-risk period.
