Following on the footsteps of Lahore, Rawalpindi has introduced designated special green lane for two-wheelers aimed at increasing road safety.
The City Traffic Police (CTP) Rawalpindi launched the project, mirroring the Lahore’s first ever green lane Rawalpindi for bikes, to make the city’s roads safer and facilitating smooth traffic flow.
The CTP Rawalpindi also issued an advisory to avoid unnecessary lane changes and wrong overtaking on the green lane and also indicated legal action in case of violation of traffic rules.
CTO Rawalpindi Benish Fatima remarked, “The use of the green lane Rawalpindi will prevent accidents and improve traffic flow.”
She also appealed to the motorcycle riders to adhere to the traffic rules and ensure their travel in the green lane.
Bikers have been asked to avoid changing lanes which often results in severe accidents due to rash overtaking. The authorities also warned of stern legal action for those who fail to follow the rules.
Earlier this year, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz instructed the Lahore’s administration to introduce special green lane for motorcyclists. In the first phase, a 10-kilometre patch of road was painted with green colour along the Ferozepur Road, from Canal Road to Lahore Bridge.
However, controversy arose in February when a light spell of rain washed away the green color of the designated lane, practically wasting millions of rupees of work.
According to media reports, Lahore Development Authority (LDA) had spent more than Rs110 million in painting the new bike lanes.
After the rainfall washed away poor quality of green paint on some patches of the green lane, it caused a social media uproar with many criticising the provincial government.
