In a major step towards providing relief to the public, the government is planning to introduce a digital system for potential solar consumers to process new applications for new net-metering connections across the country.
Federal Minister of Power and Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, held a meeting on Monday to review the matter of new net-metering connections in the country.
The Federal Minister urged that the government needed to provide a simple procedure for new net-metering applications.
According to the minister, the procedure should be “simple, transparent, and user-friendly.” It merits a mention that the consumers generally face administrative problems and delays during the net-metering process.
The administrative delays have generally been due to the bureaucratic red tape in the country, for which the minister stated, “Immediate and effective solutions must be found for the issues faced in this process.”
“We want that when people install solar net metering systems, they are able to recover their investment within three to four years and feel satisfied with the system,” he added.
It merits a mention that the government decided to reduce the buyback rates for net metering electricity to Rs10 per unit in March, 2025.
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet approved the policy amendments regarding net-metering aimed at reducing the growing financial burden on those who do not have solar systems installed.
“As part of the approved changes, the ECC has revised the buyback rate from the National Average Power Purchase Price (NAPP) to Rs10 per unit,” the statement read.
