ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to switch hospitals in Islamabad to solar power to cut electricity costs and promote clean energy.

In the first phase, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Poly Clinic will start using solar energy. The Ministry of Health has asked both hospitals to submit a plan, which will be included in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). The government will provide funds to support the transition.

Right now, PIMS pays over Rs 30 million in electricity bills every month, while Poly Clinic’s bill is more than Rs 7 million. By using solar power, hospitals will save money and reduce power outages, which have been a problem in the past due to unpaid bills.

This project is part of the government’s plan to promote renewable energy in important public institutions, ensuring long-term sustainability and lower costs.

Recently there is a unprecedented surge in rooftop installation of solar and perpetual burden of capacity repayments worth over Rs 2 trillion per annum, the government brought key changes in solar net metering by slashing down buyback rate from Rs27 to Rs 10 per unit.
